OVERVIEW
Breast implant replacement, or revision surgery, is a procedure to remove and replace existing breast implants. This may be necessary due to implant complications, aesthetic reasons, or routine long-term maintenance.
Implants typically last 10–20 years, though many patients keep theirs longer without issue. If complications such as rupture, deflation, capsular contracture, or aesthetic dissatisfaction occur, replacement offers a safe, straightforward solution.
Why Replace Implants?
Surgical intervention may be the right option if asymmetry is affecting your daily life or wellbeing. Common reasons patients seek correction include:
Silicone implants may rupture or saline implants may deflate over time
Scar tissue hardens around the implant, causing discomfort or aesthetic changes
You may wish to change implant size, from larger to smaller or vice versa
Modern shaped or textured implants may offer improved long-term results
You may wish to update your appearance after years with the same implants
The Surgical Process
Implant replacement typically takes 1–2 hours and is performed under general anaesthesia. The procedure often reuses the original incision, minimising new scarring.
Reopening the original incision site
Removing the existing implant(s) and evaluating the surrounding tissue
Treating any capsular contracture if present
Inserting the new implant(s) in the desired size and position
Closing the incision with minimal additional scarring
Recovery is often faster than primary augmentation because the breast pocket is already established.
Recovery Guide
Recovery from implant replacement is typically faster than primary augmentation since the surgical pocket already exists.
Rest and pain management. Wear surgical bra. Some bruising and swelling normal.
Light activities resume. Stitches removed around 7–10 days.
Return to work and light exercise. Avoid strenuous activity.
Resume full activity, exercise, and sports as implants settle into final position.
Long-Term Care
Modern breast implants are durable and designed to last many years. Silicone implants come with lifetime warranties from most manufacturers, though replacement may eventually become necessary.
Regular follow-up appointments and self-examination help monitor implant integrity. MRI screening may be recommended every few years to detect silent rupture in silicone implants. Many surgeons recommend implant replacement every 10–20 years as routine maintenance, though this is optional if implants remain problem-free.
