OVERVIEW
Blepharoplasty — commonly known as eye bag removal — is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and loose skin from the eyelids. The treatment can be applied to the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both, depending on the patient’s concerns.
The most common cause is the natural ageing process and the gradual loss of skin elasticity. In some cases, the condition can also be caused by thyroid disease. Regardless of cause, blepharoplasty can significantly refresh the appearance of the eye area.
WHAT CAUSES IT
Lipofilling to the breasts has become increasingly available in the UK and can be applied across a wide range of clinical and cosmetic situations:
Most Common Cause
Ageing and the gradual loss of skin elasticity causes the skin around the eyes to loosen and excess fat to become more prominent, creating a puffy or tired appearance.
Medical Cause
In some cases, eye bags and puffiness around the eyes can be caused by thyroid disease, which affects the tissues around the eyes. Mr Juma will discuss your individual circumstances at consultation.
If you develop this condition or are concerned about a change in nipple appearance, it is best to have a discussion with your GP or a Plastic Surgeon in order to undergo an assessment — and if indicated, the appropriate investigation and treatment carried out.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Blepharoplasty can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both together. Each option involves slightly different anaesthetic and recovery requirements.
For Fatty Tissue
Where the excess is primarily fatty tissue, liposuction alone can achieve excellent results — removing fat through very small incisions with minimal scarring.
For Glandular Tissue
Where firm glandular tissue is present beneath the nipple, direct excision is required to remove it effectively — liposuction alone cannot address this type.
Removes excess skin and fat from the upper eyelids, reducing heaviness and improving the field of vision where drooping skin has become significant.
Addresses puffiness and loose skin beneath the eyes — the classic “eye bag” area — to produce a more rested and youthful appearance.
Both upper and lower eyelids can be treated at the same time for a comprehensive refreshment of the whole eye area in a single procedure.
RECOVERY
Most patients find their pain limited and easily managed with appropriate pain relief tablets over the first few days following surgery.
ELEVATED HEAD
Sleep with extra pillows for the first 3 days to keep the head elevated and reduce swelling around the eye area.
STITCHES REMOVED
Stitches and paper strips are typically removed at 5–7 days following surgery.
BRUISING
Some bruising around the eye area is expected and will generally resolve within 2–3 weeks of surgery.
Supportive bras are recommended for up to 6 weeks following surgery to aid healing, reduce swelling, and support the breast tissue as it settles into its new shape.
