OVERVIEW
A facelift, also known as rhytidectomy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure designed to lift and tighten the facial skin and the underlying layers above the muscles, known as the SMAS (Superficial Musculoaponeurotic System). The goal is to help you achieve a smoother, less tired, younger-looking face.
As we age, the skin naturally loses elasticity and firmness. Factors such as gravity, sun exposure, and stress can exacerbate these effects, causing deepening folds, sagging at the sides of the mouth, loosening skin on the neck and jawline, and fine wrinkles around the eyes and lips. A facelift can help reverse these visible signs of ageing, leaving you looking younger and feeling more confident.
Candidacy
Loss of skin elasticity and firmness leading to sagging skin on the cheeks, jawline, and neck.
Loss of skin elasticity and firmness leading to sagging skin on the cheeks, jawline, and neck.
Deepening folds around the mouth and nose, or fine wrinkles around the eyes and lips marking skin ageing.
Loose, drooping skin on the sides of the mouth (jowls) and loosening skin on the neck and jawline.
An overall tired or aged appearance that affects self-confidence, particularly in social or professional settings.
The Surgical Process
A facelift is typically performed under general anaesthesia and usually requires an overnight hospital stay for monitoring. Here is how the procedure and recovery typically unfold.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. Incisions are carefully placed along the hairline and around the ears to minimize visible scarring. The surgeon gently separates the skin from the underlying facial structures.
The underlying facial muscles (SMAS) and tissues are carefully lifted and repositioned. Excess skin is trimmed away, and the remaining skin is stretched and sutured back into place, creating a more youthful contour.
While there will be some scarring, these are often well-hidden in natural creases and along the hairline, making them less noticeable over time. Incisions are carefully closed with fine sutures to promote optimal healing.
Initially, you may feel some stiffness and notice swelling and bruising — all typical following facelift surgery. Pain management options will be provided. You will need to follow aftercare instructions carefully to support healing and minimize complications.
Recovery Guide
Recovery from a facelift is gradual. Following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions carefully is essential to minimise risks and ensure smooth healing.
Stitches Removed
Stitches are typically removed 10–12 days post-surgery. You may continue to experience some swelling and bruising, particularly around the eyes and cheeks.
Social Activities Resume
Most patients can resume social activities and work after about 2–3 weeks, once initial swelling and bruising have sufficiently resolved with makeup coverage.
Avoid Risk to Face
Avoid any activities which risk the face being knocked or injured for six weeks post-operatively. This protects your healing results and prevents complications.
Swelling and numbness may persist for several months after your facelift, which is completely normal. Your surgeon will provide full written instructions at discharge and will see you for follow-up appointments throughout the healing period.
Long-Term Outlook
A facelift can deliver long-lasting results that significantly improve your appearance and boost your confidence. However, the natural ageing process continues, and factors such as sun exposure, lifestyle, and genetics can influence how your results age over time.
For many individuals, the results remain aesthetically pleasing for years. With proper skincare and sun protection, you can help maintain your results and extend the benefits of your facelift.
