OVERVIEW
Inverted nipples are not an uncommon condition, affecting around 3% of the female population. In 80% of cases it may affect both breasts. The condition has both cosmetic implications and a functional impact — in some cases it may mean the patient is unable to breastfeed, and in more severe instances it can cause recurrent infections.
The most common presentation of inverted nipples is congenital, meaning it has been present from birth. Not all patients affected will seek the advice of a plastic surgeon — but for those who do, effective correction is available.

IMPORTANT
While the most common cause of inverted nipples is congenital, it is important to exclude other conditions that may cause this — for example, certain breast cancers. A newly developed nipple inversion that was not present before should always be assessed.
If you develop this condition or are concerned about a change in nipple appearance, it is best to have a discussion with your GP or a Plastic Surgeon in order to undergo an assessment — and if indicated, the appropriate investigation and treatment carried out.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION
Many techniques for the correction of congenital inverted nipples already exist. The most suitable approach depends on the severity of the inversion:
For very mild forms of nipple inversion, the Nipplette — an off-the-counter device — may provide improvement through gentle suction and gradual eversion over time. This non-surgical option can be tried before considering surgical intervention.
For more severe and persistent conditions, surgical intervention is warranted. Multiple techniques exist — Mr Ali Juma has devised a simple, effective surgical method to evert the nipple and improve its cosmetic appearance with minimal risks and scarring. The procedure is performed as a day case under local or general anaesthetic.
Mr Juma’s Surgical Technique
Mr Ali Juma has developed a simple, minimally invasive method of operating on the nipple to evert it and restore a natural, projecting appearance. The technique is designed to achieve excellent cosmetic results with minimal risks and scarring — and can be carried out under either local or general anaesthetic as a day case procedure.
RECOVERY
This is a straightforward day case procedure — no overnight hospital stay is required. Recovery is generally quick and uncomplicated.
NO OVERNIGHT STAY
The procedure is performed as a day case — patients can return home the same day under either local or general anaesthetic.
RECOVERY PERIOD
Most patients recover within 7–10 days, after which normal daily activities can be resumed comfortably.
POST-OP BRA
A bra with a hole cut for the nipple should be worn for 3 weeks following surgery to allow proper healing without pressure on the treated area.
