OVERVIEW

What is Mastopexy (Breast Lift Surgery)?

Mastopexy, commonly known as breast lift surgery, is a cosmetic procedure designed to lift and reshape breasts that have become saggy or droopy due to factors like ageing, weight loss, gravity, pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Over time, these factors can cause the breast tissue to lose firmness and elasticity, resulting in breast ptosis (sagging).

A breast lift restores a firmer, youthful breast shape by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue. The surgery also raises the nipple to a more natural, aesthetically pleasing position. In some cases, the breast tissue may also be repositioned to enhance overall fullness.

Candidacy

Why Consider a Breast Lift?

A mastopexy can be an ideal solution for women experiencing any of the following:

Breast Sagging

Sagging due to ageing, weight fluctuations, pregnancy, or breastfeeding — causing the breasts to sit lower than desired.

Loss of Volume & Firmness

Breasts that have lost their former fullness and firmness, leaving them flatter or deflated in appearance.

Uneven Shape or Nipple Position

Uneven breast shape or nipple position that affects symmetry and overall breast appearance.

Self-Consciousness

Self-consciousness or lack of confidence related to breast appearance, particularly in clothing or swimwear.

This procedure is particularly beneficial for women who are generally satisfied with the size of their breasts but wish to correct sagging or drooping. Mastopexy not only restores a firmer, youthful appearance but can also improve the symmetry of the breasts, giving them a more uplifted and aesthetically pleasing shape.

The Surgical Process

What to Expect During Mastopexy

Breast lift surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and usually requires an overnight hospital stay for monitoring. Here is how the procedure and recovery typically unfold.

1

Surgery & Anaesthesia

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia with an overnight hospital stay for monitoring. The surgery involves removing excess skin from around the areola (the dark area around the nipple) and the underside of the breast.

2

Lifting & Reshaping

The breast tissue is repositioned to lift and reshape the breast, and the nipple is raised to a more youthful position. In some cases, a breast implant may be inserted to enhance fullness or restore volume lost due to ageing, pregnancy, or weight loss.

3

Incisions & Scarring

The surgical incisions are carefully placed to minimise visible scarring, following the natural contours of the breast. There will be some scarring, but its placement is planned to keep it as discreet as possible.

4

Post-Operative Care

After the procedure, you may experience some discomfort, swelling, and bruising — all typical following breast lift surgery. Pain management options will be provided. You will need to wear a firm support bra and dressings as directed by your surgeon to support the breasts and reduce swelling while they settle into their new shape.

Recovery Guide

Your Recovery Timeline

Gynecomastia surgery has a relatively straightforward recovery compared to many other procedures. Here is a general guide to help you plan ahead.

10–12 Days

Stitches Removed

Stitches are typically removed 10–12 days post-surgery. Continue wearing your support bra and follow dressing instructions as directed.

3–4 Weeks

Return to Work

Most patients can return to work and light activities after 3–4 weeks, once initial swelling and discomfort have sufficiently resolved.

4–6 Weeks

No Strenuous Activity

Avoid strenuous physical activity and exercise for 4–6 weeks to allow the breasts to heal properly and settle into their new shape.

You will need to follow the aftercare instructions carefully to minimise risks and ensure a smooth recovery. Your surgeon will provide full written instructions at discharge and will see you for follow-up appointments throughout the healing period.

Long-Term Outlook

How Long Do Results Last?

Mastopexy can deliver long-lasting results, but the natural ageing process, weight changes, and pregnancy can affect the breasts over time. The procedure significantly improves the shape and position of the breasts, helping to restore a youthful contour and enhanced breast symmetry.

For many women, the results remain aesthetically pleasing for years. However, maintenance may be required as further life changes occur.

Factors such as significant weight fluctuation, pregnancy, and the natural ageing process can all influence the longevity of results. Maintaining a stable, healthy weight after surgery gives the best chance of long-lasting improvement.
