OVERVIEW
A thigh lift is a surgical procedure designed to reduce fat and remove excess loose skin from the thighs. This procedure is especially beneficial for individuals who have experienced significant weight loss and are left with sagging or drooping thigh skin that cannot be improved through diet and exercise alone.
By removing excess skin and tightening the underlying tissue, a thigh lift restores a firmer, more lifted appearance to the thighs. The result is improved body contour and the ability to wear clothing more comfortably without self-consciousness.
Incisions are typically made along the pubic area and inner thigh to minimise visible scarring. Placement varies based on individual anatomy and the extent of skin removal.
A pressure garment will need to be worn for up to 6 weeks post-surgery to help reduce swelling, support healing, and optimise the final contour of the thighs.
Candidacy
A thigh lift can be an ideal solution for individuals experiencing any of the following:
Sagging or drooping thigh skin that occurs after significant weight loss, making the thighs appear loose and undefined.
Loose skin on the inner and outer thighs that cannot be tightened through diet, exercise, or non-surgical treatments.
Skin irritation or chafing caused by excess thigh skin, affecting comfort and quality of life, particularly during physical activity.
Lack of confidence in clothing choices, particularly shorts or swimwear, due to appearance of loose or sagging thigh skin.
The Surgical Process
A thigh lift is performed under general anaesthesia and typically requires a 1-2 night hospital stay for monitoring and support during the initial recovery phase.
The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia with close hospital monitoring throughout. Incisions are carefully planned and placed along the lines of the pubic area and inner thigh to minimise visible scarring while effectively removing excess skin.
Excess skin is carefully separated from the underlying muscle and fat, then removed to achieve optimal thigh contour. The surgeon may also address fat deposits using liposuction in conjunction with the lift for enhanced results.
The remaining skin is tightened and repositioned to create a lifted, firm appearance. Incisions are closed with careful attention to minimising visible scarring and achieving symmetrical, natural-looking results.
Pain management and aftercare instructions will be provided at discharge. A pressure garment will need to be worn for up to 6 weeks to support healing and reduce swelling. Time off work for rest and recuperation is important during the initial recovery phase.
Recovery Guide
Recovery from a thigh lift requires time and patience. Following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions carefully is essential to minimise complications and achieve optimal results.
SWELLING & BRUISING
Significant swelling and bruising may be present for 2–3 weeks post-surgery. Time off work during this period is advised to rest and allow proper healing to begin.
PRESSURE GARMENT
A pressure garment should be worn for up to 6 weeks to reduce swelling, support tissue healing, and help achieve optimal thigh contour and firmness.
RETURN TO ACTIVITY
Most patients can gradually return to normal activities and light exercise after 6 weeks. More strenuous activities may be resumed once your surgeon gives clearance.
Rest and support are critical during the first few weeks to ensure proper healing and optimal results. Your surgeon will provide detailed aftercare instructions and schedule follow-up appointments to monitor your progress throughout the recovery period.
Long-Term Outlook
A thigh lift delivers long-lasting results, providing a permanently improved thigh contour and lifted appearance. The excess skin that is removed does not return, and the tightening of the underlying tissues creates lasting firmness.
For many patients, the results remain excellent for years. However, significant weight gain in the future could affect the appearance of the thighs. Maintaining a stable, healthy weight after surgery gives the best chance of enjoying your improved thigh contour long-term.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and stable weight after the procedure ensures your results remain optimal long-term. Regular exercise and a balanced diet will help you enjoy the benefits of your lifted, contoured thighs for years to come.
