OVERVIEW

What is Liposuction Surgery?

Liposuction is a procedure designed to remove and reshape stubborn fat deposits from specific areas of the body. This technique is suitable for both men and women and works best for individuals who have already achieved a healthy weight but struggle to eliminate localised fat pockets despite diet and exercise.

While liposuction cannot improve stretch marks or cellulite, it can effectively change the body’s shape and contour. Common treatment areas include the thighs, abdomen, arms, neck, flanks (love handles), inner knees, and ankles. In men, it can address enlarged breasts caused by fat deposits (gynecomastia).

Candidacy

Why Consider Liposuction?

Liposuction can be an ideal solution for individuals experiencing any of the following:

Stubborn Fat Deposits

Localised fat that proves difficult to eliminate with diet and exercise alone, particularly on thighs, abdomen, and flanks.

Uneven Body Proportions

Areas of excess fat that create body asymmetry or lack of definition, affecting overall body contour and proportion.

Male Breast Enlargement

Fat deposits under the nipples causing enlarged breasts (gynecomastia) in men, affecting body confidence and clothing options.

Improved Body Confidence

Enhanced body shape and contour leading to greater confidence in appearance and improved overall body image.

Ideal candidates are individuals already at a healthy weight who have localised areas of fat resistant to diet and exercise. The procedure works best when patients have realistic expectations about the results and are committed to maintaining a stable, healthy weight following the procedure.

The Surgical Process

What to Expect During Liposuction

The anaesthesia used depends on the extent and location of the treatment. For smaller areas, local anaesthesia may be appropriate, while larger areas typically require general anaesthesia or epidural. Here is how the procedure typically unfolds.

1

Anaesthesia & Preparation

The procedure is performed under local, epidural, or general anaesthesia depending on the size and location of the treatment areas. Small areas of liposuction can be done on a day case basis, while larger areas typically require a 1–2 night hospital stay for monitoring and support.

2

Fat Removal & Contouring

Strategic incisions are made in inconspicuous areas. A cannula (thin tube) is used to carefully remove excess fat deposits. The surgeon may use liposculpture techniques to shape and contour the area for optimal body proportions and harmony.

3

Closure & Recovery Support

After fat removal, incisions are closed. An elasticated pressure garment or compression bandages will need to be worn for several weeks to support the healing process, reduce swelling, and help the skin adapt to its new contours.

4

Post-Operative Care

Pain management and care instructions will be provided. Time off work for rest and recuperation is recommended, particularly during the first 2–3 weeks when swelling and bruising are most prominent. Avoid strenuous activity until cleared by your surgeon.

1

One-Stage Procedure

Single Operation

In the majority of one-stage cases, shaped (tear drop) breast implants are used to correct the tubular shape and restore fuller, more natural proportions. In selected patients, round implants may also be appropriate. Additional procedures may be combined in the same operation:

Typically suitable for: Patients whose breast development is complete and whose degree of asymmetry and constriction allows for single-stage correction.

2

Two-Stage Procedure

Staged Expansion

For younger patients or those with significant constriction, a two-stage approach uses tissue expansion to gradually widen the narrow breast base and add fullness as breast growth nears completion (typically between ages 21–23):

Typically suitable for: Younger patients (under 21–23) still undergoing breast development, or where significant tissue expansion is needed before final implant placement.

3

Fat Transfer (Lipo-Filling / Lipomodelling)

Natural Method

Fat is harvested from the patient’s own body — typically the abdomen, flanks, or thighs — and used to enlarge and reshape the smaller breast, providing a natural correction without the use of implants:

Best suited for: Patients looking for a more natural method of correction, or those wishing to refine implant-based results.

Recovery Guide

Your Recovery Timeline

Recovery from liposuction varies depending on the extent of the procedure. Following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions carefully is essential for optimal healing and results.

1 Week

Stitches Removed

Stitches are typically removed after about 1 week. Continue wearing your pressure garment as directed to support healing and manage swelling.

2–3 Weeks

Swelling & Bruising

Significant swelling and bruising may be present for 2–3 weeks post-surgery. Time off work during this period is advised to rest and allow proper healing.

6 Weeks

Return to Work

Most patients can gradually return to normal activities and exercise after 6 weeks, once swelling has resolved and your surgeon gives clearance.

Pressure garment wear is critical for the first 4–6 weeks to support tissue healing, reduce swelling, and help achieve optimal body contour results. Your surgeon will provide full aftercare instructions at discharge.

Long-Term Outlook

How Long Do Results Last?

Liposuction delivers long-lasting results, as the removed fat cells do not return. However, the remaining fat cells in the body can still expand if weight is gained. Maintaining a stable, healthy weight after surgery is key to preserving your results indefinitely.

For many patients, the improved body contour and enhanced proportion remain excellent for years. The procedure provides a permanent change to the treated areas, giving you lasting satisfaction with your body shape.
